| August 17, 2008 The men’s gross shootout was conducted on Sunday in hot, dry conditions. Mike Biotti was the first to exit as he failed to get up and down after playing out from under the bush on the left of the green. Ed Nelson departed on hole #2 after missing a par saving putt. Dave Korff fell on #3 at the hands of Donny Knott in a chipoff. Number one seed Sean Biotti made a great bogie from a tough spot but fell victim on #4. Hole number 5 saw a 4-way chipoff with Eddie Fedele losing out. Paul Frasier lipped his par putt on #6 and took a seat. Dave Nelson hit his drive in the creek but recovered for a bogie but lost a chipoff with Kirk Nelson on hole #7. The three remaining players all made par on #8, but Kirk Nelson lost the chipoff with Hank Rauenhorst and Donny Knott to finish his day. On the final hole, Donny knocked his drive in the creek but made a great shot out of the hazard to pin high right of the green. Hank put his drive in the fairway and stuck his second shot pin high on the green. Donny’s chip was a little short and he missed his par putt. Hank made a routine two-putt par to seal the deal and claim the victory. August 3, 2008
After the first day of play at Shoshone, the score was tied at 6 points apiece. We won four of the singles matches, but lost two out of three bestball matches.
Captain Sean Biotti and his bestball partner Hank Rauenhorst led us to victory with their win Sunday. We won three singles matches and halved one. All three bestball matches went our way for a 9.5 point total on Sunday at home. The final score ended up 15.5 to 8.5 giving us the victory. This was the 14th year of Miller Cup play with the series now tied 7 each.
In addition to captain Sean, our team was rounded out by Ron Barker, Mike Biotti, Donny Knott, Eddie Fedele, Hank Rauenhorst, Paul Frasier, Dave Nelson, Kirk Nelson, Kevin Yrjana, Mike Cate, Tommy Pouttu, and Bucky Fulton.
Dave Nelson was awarded the Most Valuable Player award as he won both of his singles matches by huge margins. The only other players to win both days for us was the bestball team of Donny Knott and Eddie Fedele.
Club Championship Final
Sean Biotti and Hank Rauenhorst dueled for the club champion title again on a beautiful fall day Tuesday, Oct 4th. Both players scored one under 35’s on the first nine, keeping the match even. On the back nine, Sean gained a small advantage and they closed the first 18 with Sean holding a 2 up lead. Sean went on a birdie binge to start the second 18 by making birdies on the first four holes and increasing his lead to 5 up. From this point on, Hank and Sean played pretty even and Hank was never able to rebound. The match concluded on the thirteenth hole with both making pars, giving Sean the victory, 6 and 5.
Hank is a two time club champ and this is Sean’s third. Both of these players will win again as they
are far and away the best players in our club. Hank and Sean are the best of friends and make a dangerous
bestball team as evidenced by their performance in this year’s Sevier Bestball where they made a ton of
money in a field of top area golfers including several pros.
Men’s Net Shootout
Nathan Whatcott bested the 10 man field Sunday to capture the net shootout crown. The first hole saw Vince Peterson eliminated as he knocked his teeball out of bounds. Damon Robinson was eliminated on the second hole. Jeff Doerschel miscued on hole three and went by the wayside. On the fourth hole, Ron Hagman went out. Ken Mayer failed to get up and down from the left side of #5 and was out. Hole 6 saw a five way chipoff. Whatcott and Douglas Johnson both failed to get on the green and had to rechip. Nate put it closest and continued with Douglas taking a seat. On hole number 7, Jerry Mutch and Dave Maple both went in the creek, but Dave survived as Jerry’s putter failed. Dave lost a chipoff and exited on #8. The final hole was contested by Craig Griffith and Nate and was won by Nate despite an errant second shot behind the trees next to the putting green. He canned a pressure five footer to garner the win and the winner-take-all prize.
Dave Nelson emerged as champion in the gross shootout on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Dave played flawlessly in garnering his first victory in the coveted event. Number one seed Sean Biotti was eliminated on the first hole with an out of bounds tee shot, recovered to make a bogie but lost in a chipoff. Tim Wild fell victim on #2 by losing a chipoff with Mike Biotti and Eddie Fedele. Paul Frasier went out on #3 after hitting his approach into the creek. Allen Fulton pulled his tee shot out of bounds on #4 and was eliminated. On #5, Mike Biotti failed to get up and down from the left side of the green and was eliminated. Hank Rauenhorst went out on #6, losing a chipoff. Pat Bitterlee went by the way side on #7 with a bogie. Don Knott made a rare bogie on #8, which left Eddie Fedele and Dave Nelson to battle for the win on #9. Both players made nice pars on #9 and continued to #10 for a playoff hole. Dave hit it left of the green in the trees, chipped out and got up and down for a 4. Eddie played just short of the green with his tee ball, but failed to get it up and down which set the stage for a chip off to determine the winner. Eddie chipped first from a difficult position from behind the green. His ball rolled about 12 feet past the hole. Dave chipped up to about 8 feet to seal the deal.
Team captain Sean Biotti led our team to victory by winning both of his matches. Eddie Fedele, Don Knott, and Mike Biotti also won both of their matches. We fielded a strong team this year, but were somewhat handicapped the first day as Ron Barker was injured and could not play. Jeff Wombolt had a prior commitment and could not play on Saturday at home. Hank Rauenhorst was also unable to play Saturday, so three of our top players were on the bench Saturday, but the team overcame and took the lead. Mark Magnus, Allen Fulton, Tim Wild, Dan Kenyon, Jim Hodge, Paul Frasier, Dave Nelson, and Dave Korff rounded out our team. We are looking forward to next year’s matches, as we will be selecting the format for play and have the home course advantage on the last day. |
